An honest map of the day
The ceremony and the dancing are solved problems. Strings or an acoustic set carry the ceremony; a live band or a serious DJ owns the dance floor, and nothing else should try to compete with either. If the budget forces a choice, the band is not where to save.
Cocktail hour is the window most couples leave empty. It is the longest unscripted stretch of the day — the couple is away with the photographer, the room is being turned, and a hundred guests in family-shaped clusters are making conversation with strangers. This is where close-up entertainment earns its fee: a performer moving between groups gives two families a reason to talk to each other that no seating plan achieves.

How to choose well
Book by window, not by act. The question is never "band or magician" — they occupy different hours of the same day. The question is which windows of your day are currently empty, and cocktail hour almost always is.
Unique is a by-product, not a goal. Photo booths and caricaturists are hired to be different; the entertainment guests actually describe a year later is the one that happened to them personally, at arm's length, with their own ring or their own thought.
