What mentalism is, and what it is not
Mentalism deals in thought rather than objects. A guest thinks of something they have told no one; a decision made freely turns out to have been anticipated; a room of two hundred arrives at the same word without discussing it. There are no boxes, no assistants and very little to look at, which is exactly why it works in a room full of people who have seen a lot of entertainment.
It is not a claim to psychic ability, and Matteo never presents it as one. That distinction matters more in a corporate room than anywhere else: an audience of executives will forgive being fooled and will not forgive being patronised. The performance is honest about being a performance, and it is more impressive for it.
Structurally it does the opposite of close-up magic. Close-up reaches part of the room at very high intensity. Mentalism reaches all of it at once — which is why most events that book both use close-up through drinks and mentalism after dinner. One warms the room, the other unifies it.
The material is participatory without being exposing. Nobody is brought on stage to be embarrassed, no volunteer is made the joke, and senior people are not put in a position they would resent. In a room where the audience includes your own board and your largest client, that judgement is most of the job.

Why it works on a corporate audience
The audience at a corporate dinner is, on average, the most entertainment-saturated audience there is. They have sat through keynote speakers, comedians, bands and award reels. What they have almost never seen is thirty minutes where the subject is their own decisions.
It is also the format that generates conversation rather than applause. A band is enjoyed and forgotten by the car park; a mentalism piece is argued about for the rest of the evening, because every guest has a theory. For a host, that argument is the deliverable.
No technical dependency beyond a microphone, and where the room is large, a screen. Nothing about the piece is at risk if the AV schedule slips.
