Nantucket's summer is a closed season in the best sense: the same families, the same clubs, a calendar of weddings, benefits and porch dinners that runs from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Entertainment here has one unbreakable rule — nothing showy. The island's taste is understatement, and a stage act simply has no room to land.

Close-up magic obeys the island's rules by construction. It happens at arm's length, in the guests' own hands, at the table or on the lawn — quiet enough for a club dining room, personal enough for a rehearsal dinner, and strong enough that a benefit crowd that has seen every band on the East Coast still talks about it at the farmers' market on Saturday.

The wedding calendar is the season's spine: church ceremonies in town, receptions under tents at Siasconset and Madaket, welcome parties on harbor lawns. The cocktail hour — the couple with the photographer, two families of summer people meeting properly for the first time — is precisely the window the format was built to fill.
